History is taught using the CUSP curriculum. This is structured by using substantive concepts to teach subject knowledge and vocabulary, along with the disciplinary knowledge that is needed in order to think like a historian.
Our history curriculum is shown below and details the learning that will take place each year together with the disciplinary knowledge that is revisited regularly.
Our history learning is underpinned by our curriculum drivers, which are as follows:
Curriculum Drivers
Global Citizens – Our History curriculum will provide children with a coherent knowledge and understanding of how the world is interlinked. They will look at the importance of cooperation for a civilisation to succeed – along with studying the history of other countries, not just Britain. This will enable them to respect the history of a variety of countries and to learn from the past.
Respectful Communicators – The children will be learning about the history of the world and looking at how groups of people were treated in the past. The children will be able to compare different eras to our time and look for similarities and differences.
Active Learners – Our History curriculum will inspire curiosity through the exploration of different time periods. The children will be exposed to enquiry questions that they will take responsibility for answering and discussing. History lessons are structured to give children lots of opportunities to participate in discussions and to communicate their thoughts to others.
Aspirational Learning – Through learning about inspirational people from the past, children will develop an understanding of what is achievable and what they could aspire to. Exploring the history of other countries will expose children to different cultures and opportunities.
