Our federation curriculum is underlined by key themes which we will call our ‘ curriculum drivers’. In Maths, this is how we determine the direction and development of the work we undertake, ensuring that we provide a curriculum that is enriched and personalised, to meet the needs of our pupils.
Global Citizens – Wherever possible, we encourage the children to use and apply their learning in everyday situations so that they become global citizens equipped with the mathematical skills to make a difference in the world. Through their growing knowledge and understanding, we aim for children to learn to appreciate the contribution made by many cultures to the development and application of mathematics.
Respectful Communicators – When learning different topics within Maths, pupils will be expected to use the correct mathematical vocabulary expected for their age group.
Through reasoning problems and conjectures, pupils will develop their justification skills and practise respectfully communicating their ideas to others in their classroom community.
Active Learners – We aim to teach key mathematical concepts through a mastery approach of deepening understanding so that we promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion. Our Maths curriculum encourages pupils to notice connections, ask questions and make hypotheses based upon their observations. We want pupils to leave The Barford & Bawburgh federation inspired by Maths and energised to learn more in secondary education and beyond.
Aspirational Learners – Children are encouraged to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about Maths. We promote resilience through the exploration of the subject through problem-solving tasks and open-ended investigations, supporting their development as independent learners who begin to truly realise the link between effort and success.
In EYFS, we use NCETM Mastering Number and Numberblocks to develop a secure understanding of number in our youngest learners. They explore shape, space and measure using materials from White Rose Maths.
In KS1 & KS2, we use White Rose Maths as a basis for our Maths curriculum, making adaptations where appropriate to meet the needs of our students.
We utilise a variety of representations in our lessons to support our learners with calculations, repeating core representations throughout the school to provide a familiar, consistent approach when learning new methods, working with larger numbers or solving more complex problems.
